CEN DSRC - the signal of trust

For this blogpost I searched for an appropriate stock photo to express "trust" or "authenticity", as you can see I did not get far. They are such abstract concepts combining resilience, reliability, technical capability and attitude that I went for no stock photo and start my blogpost with an example: Daily wear and tear got to my social security card and I had to get a new one. My bank card that sits right next to it in my wallet and has a similar chip, pretty much exposed to the same wear and tear is alive and kicking. Hardy little thing my bank card, obviously my bank wants me to keep using it. It links me to my money and my bank to me. Now take a big leap: What does a story about a bank card have to do with road charging or drive and rest times of truck drivers? You probably know what comes next – I will try to ‘surprise’ you that they have a lot in common. For transactions that matter trust is a must. These are matters such as financial transactions or legal controls. This brings us to CEN DSRC. It is the signal of trust in transport. Trusted by road operators and motorists or hauliers alike both accept it to establish where vehicles have been. It is also trusted by enforcement agencies to control compliance with the drive and rest times of truckers in Europe. CEN DSRC offers a robust signal, it works short range in any condition and completes more than 99.9% of all transactions, no matter vehicle speed or vehicles in communication range. It’s a robust and cost efficient communication technology, it fits with ease into a security governance that makes it’s transactions trustworthy and reliable enough for financial transactions or indeed law enforcement. So, like the bank card, it is robust and fits into a security governance. This is why CEN DSRC is referenced in the European law providing for the remote enforcement of the digital tachograph that protects the rest time of truckers and hence motorists in general from sleepy truck or coach drivers. In the same vein it is used to remotely check on-board weighing equipment to control the weight of trucks and of course in road charging.
